8 Values of Free Expression

The ability to express ourselves freely is one of the core American values. However, it’s not always the best one, too often we allow those that have little value to hold much power with their ‘Platforms’. Some people blindly abide by every word that someone says simply because of their social status.

In looking at the Eight Values of Free Expression, the very first resonates deeply with me;
1. Marketplace of Ideas (aka Discovery of Truth) — see John MiltonAreopagitica
     This value was first suggested by Milton, who first said that when truth and falsehood are allowed to freely grapple, truth will win out. And the grappling makes the truth even stronger. His argument against requiring a license to print/publish.

It is this idea that the truth will take hold and prevail is what is mainly failing us today. With the implement of social media, nothing said or posted is sacred, nothing can be taken back and once the whole, wide world has accepted a lie, it is nearly impossible to reverse the slander that follows. We see it all too often today, from presidential elections to the reputations of famous actors dragged through the media.

Number four, to me, is the most imporant value of Free Expression we can have!

4. Individual Self-Fulfillment ( aka Self-Actualization) — see C. Edwin BakerHuman Liberty and Freedom of Speech

     Free speech enables individuals to express themselves and thereby create their own identity — and, in the process perhaps, find kindred spirits. Freedom of speech thus becomes an aspect of human dignity, human agency and autonomy.

This is the basis of everything in America, the ability to express yourself, to create YOU. The style that you want to create, the jargon that you use, the way you handle yourself, and the way you want others to perceive you all boils into what make you, you and me, me. The Idealist says that expression helps you find a kindred spirit of sorts, which is just what happens when you walk down the street and appreciate someones aesthetic.
